Insurance
4 min readAfter an accident, you may receive an estimate from your insurance company and a separate one from a repair shop. The numbers may not match — and that does not always mean something is wrong.
Insurance adjusters often prepare estimates based on visible damage, photos, and field inspection time. A body shop estimate may be more detailed because a technician can inspect the vehicle closely, look up exact parts by VIN, and account for factory repair procedures. Different starting points can produce different line items.
An insurance estimate typically covers the damage described in the claim at the time of review. It may list replacement parts, labor hours, paint operations, and materials based on what was visible or documented in photos. Insurance companies use industry databases and their own review processes to prepare these estimates.
A repair shop may identify additional items during a thorough inspection — such as misaligned panels, sensor wiring behind a bumper, or structural components that were not visible from the outside. The shop can also specify OEM parts, paint codes from the VIN, and refinishing steps needed for a proper color match.
Collision damage is not always visible on the surface. A dented bumper may hide a broken bracket. A scraped quarter panel may have damage to the inner structure. Until the vehicle is partially disassembled, some repair needs cannot be confirmed. This is one reason shop and insurance estimates may diverge.
If additional damage is discovered during repair, the shop documents it and may submit a supplement to the insurance company. The supplement explains the new findings and requests authorization for the additional work. This process is routine — it helps ensure the vehicle is repaired completely, not just cosmetically.
