If you have heard the term “supplement” during a repair, you are not alone. Supplements are a normal part of collision repair — especially when hidden damage is discovered after work begins.
What a supplement means
In auto body repair, a supplement is a request for additional repair authorization beyond what was included in the original estimate. It documents newly discovered damage, additional parts, or labor that was not visible or known at the time of the initial estimate.
Why supplements happen
The first estimate is based on what can be seen before disassembly. Once technicians remove bumpers, trim, or panels, they may find damage to brackets, sensors, wiring, or structural components that was hidden underneath. Supplements allow the shop to communicate these findings to the insurance company.

Teardown is the process of removing damaged parts to access the full extent of the impact. Common hidden issues include broken mounting tabs, bent reinforcement bars, damaged radar or camera sensors behind bumpers, and corrosion under trim pieces.
