Insurance
5 min readFiling an auto body insurance claim can feel overwhelming if you’ve never done it before. This guide walks through the basic steps so you know what to expect and what to bring.
After you report your accident to your insurance company, they will typically assign a claim number and may refer you to a claims adjuster. The adjuster reviews the damage and may prepare an initial estimate. At this point, you can also request a second opinion from a repair shop of your choice.
To prepare an accurate estimate, the shop will typically ask for:
An insurance company estimate is a preliminary review, often based on visible damage only. A shop estimate can be more detailed because the technician inspects the vehicle in person. The two estimates may differ, and that is normal — the shop may identify additional damage that was not visible in photos or during a quick field review.
A supplement is a request for additional repairs or parts that were not included in the original insurance estimate. Supplements are common — once a vehicle is disassembled, hidden damage may be discovered. The shop documents these findings and submits them to the insurance company for review.
Having a few things ready can make the process smoother: your claim number, photos of the damage, your vehicle registration or insurance card (for the VIN), and any police report if one was filed.
